Planning your Print campaign

01

Formats and campaign fit

Consider display adverts, inserts, supplements and clearly identified sponsored content where offered. Match the publication, edition, distribution area and placement to the brief. A national title and a local edition can meet very different geographic objectives.

02

What affects the cost?

Publication, edition, advert size, colour, position and insertion count affect cost. Premium positions and special formats may carry additional charges. Design, adaptation, insert production and distribution requirements should be separated from the space charge.

03

Lead times and booking deadlines

Plan around the publication date, booking deadline and final-material deadline. Weekly and monthly publications have different production cycles. Confirm edition availability and deadlines with the publisher before scheduling a time-sensitive offer.

04

Production and approvals

Request the exact dimensions, bleed, safe areas, colour profile and print-ready file requirements. Check contact details, offer dates and required disclosures carefully. Agree responsibility for final proofreading; a supplied proof is not a substitute for client approval.

05

Measurement and proof of delivery

Use tear sheets, publication copies or other agreed evidence to confirm placement. Circulation, distribution and readership describe different things and should not be used interchangeably. A dedicated response link or code can help assess enquiries without claiming that circulation equals sales.

Print advertising questions

Can I advertise only in a local edition?

Where the publisher offers one, a local edition can be considered. Confirm its distribution area and available positions.

What is the difference between circulation and readership?

Circulation describes copies distributed or sold under the stated measure; readership estimates people reading a publication. Check the source and period for each figure.

Can I change artwork after the deadline?

The publisher may be unable to accept changes after production closes. Ask about the actual cut-off and any additional cost before approving.
