Choose the location for the audience and objective
Outdoor advertising is a location decision as well as a format decision. Start with where the intended audience lives, works, shops or travels and what you want them to do. A site near a store may serve a different purpose from a large-format placement used to introduce a brand.
Ask to see the exact site, viewing direction, dimensions and current photographs. Consider visibility, competing signage, obstruction and the likely viewing moment. A map pin alone cannot establish whether the creative will be easy to see.
Static billboards and digital OOH work differently
Static billboards carry a printed message during the booked period. Budget and timing should account for artwork approval, printing, installation and removal where relevant. Ask what happens if material is damaged or the planned installation is delayed.
Digital out-of-home, or DOOH, displays creative within a scheduled rotation. Confirm the spot length, loop length, operating hours and share of time or plays being purchased. A digital booking does not necessarily give your brand continuous or exclusive display.
What affects billboard advertising costs?
The location, format, size, visibility, booking duration and availability all matter. Digital proposals also depend on scheduling and the delivery unit being sold. A premium location and a network of smaller screens should be assessed against the job each would do for the campaign.
Ask the quote to separate media rental, print or digital production, installation, adaptations, management fees and applicable taxes. Establish whether lighting, maintenance, removal and creative changes are included. Compare the complete campaign cost rather than one headline rental figure.
Prepare creative for the viewing moment
Outdoor creative needs to communicate within the time people have to view it. Prioritise one message, legible type and a clear brand or response cue. Check the artwork at the intended proportions rather than assuming that a social post will work on a billboard.
Obtain the media owner's current dimensions, resolution, file format and delivery instructions. For digital screens, confirm animation rules and duration. Agree approval responsibilities and deadlines before production starts; requirements differ by placement.
Understand reach and proof of display
Ask for the source, period and methodology behind audience or traffic estimates. Passing traffic is not automatically the number of people who saw or remembered an advertisement. Estimates from different methods should not be combined as if they measured the same thing.
For static sites, agree dated installation evidence and reporting of outages or obstructions. For digital screens, ask about playback reports and exceptions. These establish delivery; brand awareness, store visits and sales require an appropriate measurement plan.
Prepare a comparable outdoor advertising brief
Provide target areas, relevant stores or destinations, audience, campaign dates and budget. State whether static, digital or both are suitable and whether you can adapt existing creative. Ask for alternatives that explain location fit, exclusions and evidence.
Advertified can help assess OOH options against that brief. Availability, permissions, production obligations and final commercial terms must be confirmed for the selected placements. An enquiry or proposed shortlist does not reserve a site.
